2020 has definitely been a whirlwind year so far and it’s almost hard to believe that Christmas is upon us already. With the Christmas season looming we’ve been starting to think about Christmas shopping. We know, don’t come for us. We know that Christmas shopping can be hard at the best of times but now we’re also faced with the question of what do you get your loved ones in the middle of a pandemic?

Something they can still get use of during ‘lockdown’? Ideally. Something loving? Yes. Something that says you care and are there to support them at the end of what has been a pretty hard year? Definitely.

Our favourite part of our job is seeing the lives that people have had. There’s something truly special about being able to gain a glimpse into people’s lives, no matter the medium. Whether it’s photos of hazy University days gone by, camcorder videos of children growing up or cinefilm recordings of people’s wedding days.

Recently, Joyce Taylor visited our shop in Edinburgh to collect her cinefilm transfer. The camera had been passed on to her from her parents, so we were able to transfer film of her as a baby and young child, right through to film of her as a mother herself spending time with her own children.

She is now in her eighties and we were able to restore a whole lifetime of memories for her. It almost seemed crazy we could fit all that into one DVD and yet her memories are now preserved in a form she can re-watch and enjoy for the rest of her life.

Given the fact it’s been hard to make memories like that with those we don’t live with this year, we can’t help but think there would be no better, more meaningful or unique Christmas present right now than to gift our loved ones with the means to relive the better times we’ve spent together.
